Service Description: To manage Kentucky’s forests in a long-term sustained manner, private and public agencies must understand the composition and extent of Kentucky’s forests and how they are changing. One of the objectives of the Kentucky Landscape Snapshot Project (KLS) was to refine several classes from the baseline NLCD 2001 land cover map to Kentucky specific categories. The resulting 2001 Kentucky Land Cover Dataset (KLCD01) provided information with which to advise landowners and government agencies in forest management within the context of a larger ecosystem. The KLCD01 map is based on a hierarchal mapping approach using the National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD 2001) as a baseline map from which specific classes relevant to Kentucky were refined. Refinement of land cover classes was achieved by use of a classification and decision tree (DT) method relying on a combination of Landsat imagery and ancillary data. This approach proved successful in limiting the effects resulting from errors of commission with other Level II classes. DT trees were created using a hierarchical method whereby rules were created and applied only for sub classes of a single baseline map category. For example, DT rules were generated to classify only deciduous pixels from the baseline map into its three sub-classes such as “Oak Forest”, “Yellow Poplar Forest”, and “Mixed Deciduous Forest”. Sanborn produced for the KLS a statewide land cover dataset, KLCD 2001, consisting of 32 individual land cover classes. The increase in classification detail resulted in Level III classes being introduced such as Openland Mined, and various types of Woodland, for example. The hierarchical breakdown of land cover classes and a detailed description of the product appear on the project report, available from the Kentucky GeoPortal: http://kygisserver.ky.gov/geoportal/catalog/search/resource/details.page?uuid=%7B4A55CEB9-D916-404C-93CB-278C4CF3F008%7D. The accuracy assessment report for the KLCD01 is also available from the same source: http://kygisserver.ky.gov/geoportal/catalog/search/resource/details.page?uuid=%7BCB1F6AFD-C652-4414-AC48-7AA90D200EE0%7D .
